Cogent Pet Health began with a collaborative brainstorming session in early 2021. Efrem Hunter, DVM (Chief Veterinarian at Cogent Pet Health) and Matt Ziegler, M.S. (Chief Scientist at HydroScience Custom Formulations) found camaraderie through both personal and professional success using natural ingredients for pets in their own spheres. The founding team shared a unique dedication to scientific research and an ongoing dissatisfaction with the lack of effective and multifunctional products available to pet owners. 

Many veterinarians and pet experts hear feedback from pet owners who wrestle with the confusion of what pet health products to buy, how to give their pets tablets or liquid supplements, and how they can have confidence in the efficacy and quality of what they’re giving their pets. Unfortunately, leading pet health brands are often driven by decreasing prices, cutting out proven ingredients, or only adding ineffective trace amounts of new, promising ingredients such as hemp. 

Finding common ground and empathy for both pets and owners, the founders of Cogent Pet Health embarked on a mission to make superior and multifunctional pet health products based on truly effective ingredients, in meaningful amounts, in combination with high-quality US-sourced hemp. After many months of research, sourcing, testing, and formulation, the ingenious collaboration led to straightforward, synergistic formulas in tasty, easy-to-give soft chews that both pets (and their savvy owners) love.

About Dr. Hunter

Cogent Pet Health is the vision of Dr. Efrem Hunter, Chief Medical Officer and veterinarian with years of experience treating pets, educating pet parents, and training other clinicians. Considered a “guru” among his peers, Dr. Hunter is now applying his hands-on experience and practical know-how to formulate functional yet tasty pet health products.

From his 22 years of veterinary medicine experience, Dr. Hunter has developed an understanding of the role that stress plays in our pets’ lives. He strives to be a source of trusted guidance in an industry where pet owners are often left navigating online searches and other confusing resources when a visit to the local vet hospital isn’t possible.

Knowing that families with pets are always looking for ways to enhance their furry friends’ lives, Dr. Hunter approaches animal health from a whole-health and wellbeing perspective. Instead of solely focusing on a specific symptom in isolation, Dr. Hunter looks to also address stress, which fosters wellness and comfort from the inside out.
