What is the core idea behind Cogent Pet, and how does that make you unique?
During the past few turbulent years when immediate access to veterinary services became restricted, pet owners were scrambling to help their pets with everything from routine vaccines to care for long-term conditions. Even today, staff shortages have complicated getting into a veterinary hospital. Pet owners are often left to internet searches, advice from friends, or recommendations from pet store employees when trying to manage their pet’s health. There needs to be a middle ground between the vet hospital and un-vetted suggestions made by well-meaning but uninformed folks who do not have the experience and background required to make sound recommendations about pet health.
Cogent Pet Health is founded on veterinary medicine. Veterinarians are the experts on pet care and should be at the center of a reputable pet supplement brand. We want to partner with pet parents trying to make informed decisions for their furry family members and help them navigate an endless variety of marketed products. Veterinarians practicing in veterinary clinics utilize their education and experience to treat pets presented in the office. As the medical director at Cogent Pet Health, I utilize my skills and background in veterinary medicine to develop accessible, safe, and effective products for pet owners searching for high-quality pet supplements.
From your perspective, what is the most common, yet often overlooked, pet health issue right now? Is this a preventable problem?
We are finally starting to consider pets' mental and emotional well-being. More and more, veterinary experts are now beginning to understand the sources and effects of stress on pet health. Behavioral problems were some of the first conditions that pointed to the environmental, family, and home dynamics that trigger physical signs of anxiety in pets. But we now know that stress is associated with many other issues beyond separation anxiety. Pet stress can come from a variety of sources, including the pet owner!
Stress may be one of the most overlooked aspects of pet health, but that is starting to change. Preventing stress can be difficult if not impossible to do in some circumstances; managing stress is the key. In human health, mindfulness meditation, exercise, and even having a pet have all been highlighted as effective ways to manage everyday stress. These ideas are crossing over into understanding and treating the effects of pet stress as well. In cats, for example, stress is often a contributing factor to urinary health issues and managing stress is often recommended as part of the treatment plan. Veterinarians are beginning to recognize that stress may be the untreated aspect of multiple commonly encountered health conditions in our companion animals. Cogent Pet Health is helping to pave the way for understanding and addressing stress and other overlooked components of overall pet health.
You are an expert in educating both patients and other veterinarians on prescription pet medications. What is the impetus for launching your own line of pet health supplements, and why are these complementary products important for both pets and their owners?
The most important part of this question is the consideration of pets and their owners. Veterinarians are skilled in diagnosing pets and creating treatment plans that give pets the best chances for recovery and high quality of life. Unfortunately, pet owners frequently get left out of this equation. Cogent Pet Health sees pet parents as a critical part of the plan to optimize their pet’s health, and so we strive to provide solutions that make sense for both pets and their families.
Ideally, conversations on the latest pet care innovations among veterinarians, hospital teams, and pet owners are built upon a multi-modal concept. Simply put, multi-modal means combining different ingredients that are shown to target distinct aspects of a disease process. Multi-modal therapies are designed to be more effective than treatments focused on only one component of a pet’s condition.
Consider joint discomfort. There are a lot of individual yet related factors affecting optimal joint function that can contribute to the overall discomfort a pet feels. Blocking one source may offer temporary relief, but other unaddressed components quickly bring symptoms back. In these situations, people may notice that a product worked at first but then stopped working or they might assume that their pet just got accustomed to it and the therapy seems less effective. It is imperative to consider all root causes in order to best promote joint health and mobility.
When we combine active ingredients that address each underlying cause, not only are therapies more effective, but we also reduce the risk of excessive treatment by incrementally increasing doses of one ingredient. It’s not unusual for pet owners and even some veterinarians to add doses when a treatment becomes less effective, but this can be dangerous. By combining complementary ingredients at appropriate doses, we reduce this risky and futile practice. Cogent Pet Health starts from a multi-modal concept to formulate pet supplements that combine complementary and efficacious ingredients that work together.
Tell us about some of the most exciting new research in veterinary science, and how does this inspire your mission?
New research on the potential uses of hemp-based products for pet health is very interesting. Many studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of hemp bioactives in humans with various health conditions and most notably in fighting the effects of stress. It is incredible that this novel ingredient, that has become readily available and is now endorsed for safety, may be an effective option to treat pets suffering from similar health conditions. Recent data even suggests that compounds in hemp can soothe skin irritation in animals by modulating immune activation. The research is compelling and translating this into well-designed products offers informed pet owners a new, inexpensive, easily accessible option for supporting the health of their pets.
Consequently, we include broad-spectrum hemp extract in our products because it fits perfectly into the multi-modal concept that I described earlier. Like all mammals, dogs and cats have receptors targeted by hemp compounds that play a role in maintaining physical and emotional health. As part of our already unique and functional formulas backed by science, we believe that adding the highest quality sources of hemp extract is one of the best ways to provide accessible, safe, and effective solutions for pet owners searching for superior pet products.
Can you share one of your most meaningful pet patient memories with us?
There are so many pet memories I can think of from over the years. The one that first comes to mind right now is a patient named Sadie from Florida. Sadie was a very sweet mixed-breed dog with a severe fear of thunderstorms and a committed owner who adopted Sadie from a rescue organization. After a short time, her owner developed a fear and anxiety over the effects those thunderstorms had on Sadie. They both needed help.
It rains almost every day in Florida, and thinking back on it, Sadie’s reaction to thunderstorms may have been the reason she was given up for adoption. Approaching thunderstorms caused Sadie to start panting like she had been running for miles. She would also whimper, whine, and hide anywhere. Sadie would hide under tables and in closets, and on the day her owner came to me seeking help for Sadie’s anxiety, she hid in one of the cabinets in our exam room. Sadie’s reaction to thunderstorms was dramatic and her owner’s reaction to Sadie’s anxiety was equally jarring. Sadie’s owner was near tears when she came into my office. She had been up all night and didn’t go to work that day. She felt helpless and frustrated because she couldn’t help the dog she rescued. Sadie and her owner were both visibly stressed out.
We kept Sadie for the day and let her stay in the exam room cabinet while her owner went home to get some rest, a shower, and possibly a cocktail or two. Since we were in a hospital setting, we started by giving Sadie some prescription medications to relive her current anxiety from the present crisis. Ultimately, our goal was to find something that her owner could routinely give at home to help manage Sadie’s anxiety.
Neither I nor her owner wanted Sadie to be on strong prescription sedatives every day for Florida’s regular thunderstorms. We both wanted the same lovable Sadie, just without the anxiety, not a medicated, half-conscious dog who could barely lift her head. Our challenge was to find something that would help both Sadie and her owner live their best anxiety-free lives.
We worked hard to develop a combination of supplements Sadie could safely take every day to help her through the storms. We found a dose that would not be dangerous if we needed to add prescription medications to the mix on really bad days such as when thunderstorms coincide with fireworks, or during prolonged periods of storms during hurricane season. My experiences with Sadie, her owner, and Florida’s relentless summer thunderstorms contributed to the founding of Cogent Pet Health and our Skin and Stress formula.
